Here’s a little exercise. Pick up your phone and ask out loud: “Where can I find a web developer in Oslo?”
Notice what happens. You don’t get a list of twenty links to scroll through. You get one answer. Maybe two. A voice or a text box that says “here’s what you’re looking for” – and then the conversation is over.
It’s this small detail that changes everything. Because when there’s only room for one answer, being “one of the results” isn’t enough. You have to be the answer. And that’s exactly what AEO is about.
What does AEO actually mean?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization – in plain terms, optimizing to become the answer.
Regular search engine optimization (SEO) is about getting high up on a list. AEO is about something a little different: being picked as the actual answer when someone asks a specific question – whether in Google’s answer boxes, in voice search on mobile, or in an AI assistant.
The difference sounds small, but it’s big in practice. On a list, you can be number five and still get a click. As “the answer,” there’s only one spot. Either it’s you, or it’s someone else.
Why this has become so important right now
Three things have happened at the same time, and they pull in the same direction.
First, people have become impatient. We want answers now, not after reading through five websites. Second, phones and smart speakers have made voice search completely normal – and when you talk to a machine, you expect one answer back, not a list. Third, AI assistants have taken over more and more of the job of “reading for us” and serving up a finished answer.
The result is that a large share of searches now end without a click. The answer was delivered in the search itself. For your business, this means visibility is no longer measured only by where you rank, but by whether you’re mentioned in the answer at all.
What kind of content becomes “the answer”?
The good news is that you don’t need to trick the system. You just need to write in a way the machine can easily pick up – which happens to be better for real people too.
Think about how a helpful colleague answers. They get to the point. They say “it usually costs between X and Y,” not “it depends on many factors that we’d be happy to discuss in a meeting.” They answer the question before they start selling.
In practice, this is what usually gets picked as the answer:
Content that answers a clear question right away. If the paragraph starts with the question itself and gives the answer right after, you’ve already won half the battle.
Short, clear wording. An answer of two or three sentences that stands on its own is much easier to lift out than a long, winding text.
Real questions, phrased the way people actually ask them. “What does a website cost?” works better than a stiff heading like “Pricing structure for digital deliverables.”
A tidy FAQ section. Questions and answers are almost tailor-made for how answer engines and AI pick up information – that’s why you’ll see them at the bottom of this article too.
Three things you can do this week
You don’t need a big project to get started. Start small.
Write down the ten questions you get most often from customers – the ones you could almost answer in your sleep. That’s gold, because it’s exactly what people search for.
Put the answers on your website, phrased as questions and answers. Don’t be vague. Answer the way you’d answer a customer you want to help.
Be specific where others are vague. Dare to say something about price, time and how you work. Whoever answers honestly becomes the one the machine – and the customer – trusts.
A small caveat
AEO isn’t a magic button. You won’t become “the answer” to everything overnight, and some questions are fiercely competitive. But most local businesses aren’t actually competing against the whole world – they’re competing against a few others in the same city and industry. And there, a surprising number still haven’t taken this seriously. That’s your opportunity.
Frequently asked questions
Are AEO and SEO the same thing?
No, but they're related. SEO gets you onto the list. AEO makes you the direct answer. Both build on the same foundation: good content and credibility.
Do I need new technology to do AEO?
Mostly not. It's mainly about how you structure and phrase your content. A bit of technical setup (like schema markup) helps.
Does this work for small businesses?
Yes, especially for local businesses. "Who nearby can help me with …" is exactly the kind of question answer engines love.
What's the single most important step?
Answering the questions your customers actually ask, honestly and clearly. Start there.
